THE BODY SHOP AND WOMAN CONNECT:
DID YOU KNOW?
·         Late Dame Anita Roddick, started The Body Shop on 26th March 1976, simply to create a livelihood for herself and her two daughters. She had no training or experience. Anita saw entrepreneurship as a means of survival, and firmly believed it nurtured creative thinking. Running her first shop taught her business is not financial science, but all about trading; buying, selling and creating a product or service so good that people will want to pay for it. Testament to her firmly held business beliefs, over 35 years on The Body Shop is now a multi-local business with over 2,500 stores in over 63 different countries. And she always claimed she didn't have a clue how she got there!

·         From the beginning of The Body Shop® we have sought out women in their communities and listened to their stories, finding out about their beauty rituals and valuing their knowledge. An example of this was when Anita Roddick, our founder visited Ghana where she met the women producing shea butter and discovered they used this natural moisturiser to prevent dry skin. It seemed obvious to her that it should be in our products!
·         The Community Trade programme began by harnessing the power of the natural ingredients that women had used for generations, using trade as a means of empowering women to improve the lives of their families and communities.
·         The Body Shop refuses to use beauty as the single narrow aspect of a woman’s characteristics to define all that they are. We search for the display of spirit and non-conformist beauty rather than an idealised form. Our philosophy is that looking good, feeling good and doing good are inextricably linked.
